By size

What it costs to run a car, by size

The bigger the car, the more servicing it needs and the dearer its tyres; and as it is usually worth more, it also pays more for insurance. Fuel depends more on the engine than on size.

By fuel

Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric: which is cheapest?

The average of every version of each engine type sold since 2020 (3.508), with the same assumptions.

EngineVersionsPer monthMedianPer kmEnergy per monthMaintenance per month

Electric cars come out cheaper because we assume home charging at 0,15 €/kWh: electricity averages 38 € a month, compared with 215 € of fuel for a petrol car. If you charge on the street, each kWh costs quite a lot more: work it out with your own price. Electric or combustion?

We calculate plug-in hybrids as charged sometimes, like the average measured by the European Commission: if you always charge them they use quite a lot less fuel, and if you never charge them, the same as their non-plug-in version. Each engine type's average goes up with the sports and luxury cars that use it; the median is what the car in the middle costs.

Your numbers

What makes the cost go up or down

Averages are for comparing. Your own figure depends mainly on these things.

How far you drive

The more kilometres you drive, the more you spend each month, but each kilometre gets cheaper, because insurance, road tax, the ITV and part of the servicing cost the same. Here we keep insurance the same in every case.

The insurance you choose

It's what varies most from person to person. These are the averages for the same cars for a 40-year-old driver with no claims; if you are 18 to 25, our calculations multiply it by 2,15.

Paying a lot for your insurance?

Where you live

Fuel, road tax and the ITV vary from place to place. With the same cars, the cheapest province is Las Palmas (228 € a month) and the most expensive, Gipuzkoa (257 €).

Road tax for a car of 8 to 11.99 fiscal horsepower ranges from 34,08 € a year in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to 89,25 € in Donostia-San Sebastián.

The car's age

In our calculations servicing goes up 5 % a year from the fifth year, and the ITV is due every 2 years from 4 years old and every year from 10. This is what you spend on average in the 5 years after buying it.
