Frequently asked questions
What people ask us most about the calculations, the data and the tools.

The calculations
What's included in the monthly cost?+
Fuel or electricity at real-world consumption, insurance, your local road tax, ITV, maintenance and tyres. We don't count financing, parking, tolls, fines or major repairs outside the warranty: if you have them, add them on top.
How we calculate it →Why is the fuel consumption higher than the official figure?+
Because official consumption figures fall short. According to the real-world consumption data collected by the European Commission, petrol cars use 24% more and diesels 18% more. Plug-in hybrids use 3,5 times the official figure on average, because they're rarely charged, and for electric cars we add 15%.
Is it a quote?+
No. They're estimates to guide you and compare cars, built from public data and the assumptions we explain in our methodology. What you really spend depends on how you drive, where you fill up and what your insurer and garage charge you.
How do I tailor it to me?+
On each car's page, answer a few questions: where you live, how many kilometres you drive, what insurance you have or how much you pay, whether it's new or used and how many years you'll keep it. Your answers are saved in your browser and every price on the site is then worked out with them. You can change them or start over whenever you like.
Why is depreciation shown separately?+
Because it doesn't come out of your pocket every month: you notice it when you sell. We work it out from the used car market curve (the Ganvam-DAT index and other reports). Hybrids hold their value a little better and electric cars worse.
Can I save the calculation?+
Yes. On each car's page you can download a PDF report with your answers, the cost breakdown and the depreciation.
The data
Where do the cars and their data come from?+
From the European Environment Agency (EEA) CO₂ register, which lists every car registered in the EU with its power, engine size, weight, emissions and official fuel consumption. We use cars registered in Spain from 2010 to 2024 and, in each generation, the engines with at least 20 registrations. Cars from before 2010 come from the Spanish Tax Agency price tables published in the BOE.
My car is older and says “estimated”. Why?+
There's no European register for 2000 to 2009: the engine, power and price come from the Spanish Tax Agency (Hacienda) tables, but we estimate fuel consumption, CO₂ and weight from similar cars, and the car page says so. Cars from before 2020 were also type-approved on a gentler cycle (NEDC), so we add how far cars of that era really deviated, according to the ICCT.
How we handle older cars →Where do fuel prices come from?+
From the Ministry for the Ecological Transition's petrol station Geoportal, which publishes every station's prices daily. We use the average for your municipality or, if there isn't one, for your province. Latest data we have: 15/10/2026.
Cheap petrol stations by province →Why doesn't the road tax match what my town hall charges?+
We have the tax bylaw for 61 municipalities, mostly provincial capitals and large cities, including their discounts for electric and hybrid cars. Elsewhere we use the legal minimum rates, so what you pay will be a bit more. If your town hall's figure doesn't match ours, let us know.
Road tax by municipality →Where does the new price of each car come from?+
From the Spanish Tax Agency's 2026 average selling price tables, published in the BOE (the official gazette): the same ones used for registration tax and transfer tax (ITP). They tend to come in a little below list price. If a version isn't in them, we give a rough price, and you can enter your own in the calculator.
I can't find my car. Why?+
We cover every model with more than 1,000 registrations in Spain from 2020 to 2024, plus many popular ones no longer sold: about 96% of registered cars. Try the search with the model and year (for example, “clio 2020”). If it still doesn't show up, write to us.

Does it cost anything? Do I need to sign up?+
No. All the calculators are free and you don't need to sign up or give any details. Ads, when there are any, are marked as sponsored.
What else can I work out?+
Besides the cost of each car: compare two cars, find the cheapest petrol stations, your local road tax, garage prices, what your car is worth, the DGT eco sticker and low-emission zones, electric car grants, whether leasing or buying works out better, the ITV inspection, whether you pay too much for insurance and what it costs to import a car or buy it used.
All tools →Do you store my answers?+
Not on our servers. Your answers, the cars you've viewed and your petrol station province are stored only in your browser, so you don't have to repeat them. They're deleted when you clear this site's data in your browser.
What's stored in your browser →Advertisers and contact
I've spotted a figure that doesn't add up. How do I tell you?+
Write to us through the contact form: tell us which page it's on and what you saw, and we'll look into it. It really helps.
Report a mistake →How do I advertise on the site?+
There are spaces for dealerships, insurers, garages, lenders, petrol stations and charger installers, on car pages and petrol station pages, by model and by province. Write to us and we'll tell you more.
See the spaces →Can't find your question?
Write to us and we'll get back to you. To report a mistake, tell us which page you saw it on.
