What gets replaced when it wears out
They have no fixed date: it depends on how and where you drive. With 60.000 km and about 4 years, this is where each part stands if it's the factory one.
Front brake pads115 €
Usually lasts 30.000 to 60.000 km
Have the thickness measured: 2 mm minimum (DGT).
Due for replacement: have it checkedFront brake discs and pads285 €
Usually lasts 75.000 to 100.000 km
They're usually replaced every second set of pads (RACE).
Not due yetFront shock absorbers345 €
Usually lasts 65.000 to 90.000 km
Have them checked every 20,000-30,000 km: you don't notice the wear when driving (RACE, DGT).
Not due yet4 tyres fitted400 €
They last about 40.000 km (our estimate)
Legal minimum: 1.6 mm of tread; the RACE advises replacing them at 3 mm.
If it's the original, it's overdueClutch605 €
Usually lasts 150.000 to 200.000 km
Manual gearbox only.
It wears faster if you drive a lot in town (RACE).
Not due yet12 V battery175 €
Usually lasts 3 to 5 years
Have it tested from the third year on (DGT).
Due for replacement: have it checked
Timing
It depends on the engine, and the service book has the final say. If you don't have it, ask at an official dealer for your brand. Here are both cases:
If it has a belt
The kit (belt, tensioners and rollers) is replaced between 100.000 and 150.000 km or at 10 years, whichever comes first (DGT, RACE).
In your plan: At 105.000 km.
Not due yetIf you don't know whether it was replaced, have it replaced: if it snaps, the repair is expensive (DGT).
If it has a chain
It isn't replaced routinely: normally not before 250.000 km (DGT). Have it checked if it's noisy: a stretched chain hits the cover (RACE).
Spark plugs
It depends on what they're made of (see the book). Those in newer cars are usually platinum or iridium (RACE).
- Copper: every 40.000 kmNext change: at 80.000 km
- Platinum or iridium: every 100.000 kmNext change: at 100.000 km
Set of 4: €10-30 + labour (RACE).

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How often should a car be serviced?+
Whatever its service book says: depending on the model, usually every 10,000, 15,000 or 30,000 km (RACE). If you don't know otherwise, oil every year or every 15,000 km (RACE); the DGT says 5,000 to 30,000 km or 2 years depending on the model.
Do I lose the warranty if I get it serviced outside the dealer?+
No. The OCU points out that you can have it serviced at any independent garage without losing the manufacturer's warranty, using parts of any brand that meet the manufacturer's minimum requirements. Ask them to stamp the service book and keep the invoices.
How do I know if my car has a timing belt or a chain?+
It's in the service book. If you don't have it, ask at an official dealer for your brand. It depends on the engine, not the model: the same car can have a belt with one engine and a chain with another. Hybrids usually have a chain (RACE).
How much does it cost to maintain a car?+
It depends on the car and the garage. As a reference, the OCU calculated in 2016 that the services for the first 100,000 km cost 978 € on average at official dealers, 3 to 6 visits depending on the brand. Above you can see what each job costs in your province: cheap, typical and expensive.
Does an electric car need maintenance?+
Less, but yes: brakes, brake fluid every 2 years, tyres, shock absorbers, cabin filter, battery coolant and the 12 V battery (DGT, RACE). It has no engine oil, engine filters, spark plugs, timing belt or clutch.
How often is brake fluid changed?+
Every 2 years, as manufacturers recommend (RACE), or between 40.000 and 60.000 km (DGT), whichever comes first. Electric cars too.
