Highlights
What the data says
C-segment compacts, like the Golf, the León or the Corolla, are the middle ground: more room than a supermini without reaching what a saloon costs to run. SUVs of the same size aren't included here, because they have their own ranking.
Of the 52 models still sold new, the one that costs least is the Kia EV4 (Electric 204 CV): 116 € a month, 1.396 € a year. Number 20 on the list, the Ford Focus, costs 219 € a month: 103 € more than the first. The average across all 52 is 216 € a month, 23 € less than the average for all cars on sale (239 €).
For the Kia EV4, the biggest cost is insurance: 34 € a month, followed by electricity (32 €) and tyres (22 €).
7 of the top 20 are electric: with home charging at 0,15 €/kWh, energy costs them far less than a petrol or diesel car. Without a plug, the one that costs least is the Dacia Jogger (1.0 GLP (bifuel) 91 CV): 198 € a month.
The best-seller on the list is the Toyota Corolla: 21.347 registrations in Spain in 2025, adding up all its versions. With the version shown here it costs 204 € a month and comes in at number 14.
How we calculate it
The same assumptions as each car's page
- Only models still sold new are included: those registered in 2025 according to the European Environment Agency's register.
- Each model is included with its best-selling version still on sale; in the “No plug” tab, with its best-selling petrol, diesel, hybrid or LPG version.
- 15,000 km a year for 5 years, bought new. Real consumption: the type-approval figure plus the real-world gap measured by the European Commission.
- Fuel: the average of filling stations in Spain on 15/10/2026. Electricity: 0,15 €/kWh, charging at home (rapid chargers cost several times more).
- Road tax at the legal minimum rates and ITV at the average fee across regions. Insurance, maintenance and tyres: our own estimates, the same across Spain.
