Questions
Frequently asked questions
What does the number plate report include?+
Make, model, version, year of first registration, fuel, engine size, power, doors and part of the chassis number (VIN), depending on what each country's register holds. With a Spanish plate, also the official DGT eco sticker. And if the car is in our catalogue, what it costs to run each month and when its ITV is due.
Where does the data come from?+
The make, model and engine come from a commercial vehicle-data provider, RegCheck (Infinite Loop Development, Ireland), which we pay for every lookup: in Spain there's no free official way to look up that data by number plate, and the DGT only sells reports on each vehicle. We ask the DGT for the eco sticker, and the running cost comes from our catalogue.
Does it show who owns the car?+
No. The registered keeper's details aren't available to just anyone, and even if they were we wouldn't show them. We don't show the full chassis number (VIN) either: just the start and the end, so you can check it's your car.
Do you store the number plate?+
No. To do the lookup we send it to the data provider and, if it's Spanish, to the DGT. So we don't pay twice for the same lookup, we keep the car's details in memory for up to 30 days, alongside an encrypted fingerprint of the plate that doesn't reveal what it was. It isn't kept in any log.
Why is there a lookup limit?+
Because every lookup costs us money and we don't want anyone using the site to trawl through number plates. You can do 10 lookups an hour, and there's a daily maximum for the whole site. Repeating a plate looked up recently doesn't count.
What if the data is wrong?+
It comes from third parties and may contain errors or be incomplete: the registration certificate and the technical data sheet are what count. If you're buying a used car, also get the DGT report, which tells you whether it has charges, seizures or an expired ITV.
