How we calculate it
Same assumptions on every page
- The monthly cost is the running cost: fuel or electricity, insurance, road tax, ITV, maintenance and tyres, at 15,000 km a year for 5 years with the car bought new. Depreciation is shown separately.
- The cars are those sold new since 2020, each with its best-selling version.
- Figures are recalculated whenever we update the data; each source's date is on its page.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Where does this data come from?+
From official and open sources: the Ministry for the Ecological Transition (prices at every filling station), the European Environment Agency (each car's consumption), the Tax Agency tables, each council's tax bylaws, the DGT and OpenStreetMap. Each page says where each figure comes from.
How often is it updated?+
Fuel prices, whenever we regenerate the data (the current ones are from 15/10/2026). Taxes and low-emission zones, when the bylaws change: each page says when it was last checked.
Why does it vary so little between provinces?+
Because only fuel, road tax and ITV change; we calculate insurance, maintenance and tyres the same everywhere. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla come out cheaper because of how fuel is taxed there.
How do I cite this data?+
With each figure's original source (we give it on every page) and a link to the page you took it from, so it can be checked.
