How many kilometres do you drive a year?

Or drag the car to your annual kilometres

How it works

Not the cheapest to buy: the cheapest to own

A cheap car that uses a lot or loses value quickly can end up costing you more than one that costs more to buy. That's why we rank them by everything they cost you over 5 years.

Everything it costs over 5 years

What it loses in value (what you pay minus what you'd get when selling it) plus fuel or electricity, insurance, maintenance, tyres, road tax and ITV. The one with the lowest total comes first.

With your numbers

Your mileage, fuel prices where you live, your town's road tax and what electricity would cost you depending on where you can charge.

Only the ones that suit you

Your budget, the size, whether you can enter your city's low-emission zone and your must-haves: automatic gearbox, ECO or 0 sticker, 4x4 or 7 seats.

The assumptions behind each item (real-world consumption, insurance, servicing, tyres, loss of value) are in how we calculate it. Already have two in mind? Compare them item by item.

Data

Where the numbers come from

Road tax comes from your town's tax bylaw (or the legal minimum if we don't have it), the used price from the used-car market curve in the valuation tool and low-emission zones from each city's bylaws, as in DGT sticker and LEZ.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do you know which car works out cheapest for me?+

For every version in the catalogue that matches your answers we add up what it would cost you over 5 years: what it loses in value (the purchase price minus what you'd get when selling it) and what you spend on fuel or electricity, insurance, maintenance, tyres, road tax and ITV, with your mileage and local prices. We keep the cheapest version of each model and show you the 5 models with the lowest total.

Why do so many electric cars and hybrids come up?+

Because they cost little per kilometre, pay less road tax in many towns and need less servicing. If you can't charge at home, electricity from public chargers costs more than three times as much and the sums change: tell us where you can charge and we take it into account.

What if I want a used car?+

Choose «Used» and your budget. For each version we look for the most recent year, from 1 to 15 years old, whose approximate market price fits your budget, and work out the 5 years from there, with more maintenance the older it is. With the DGT sticker for that year.

How do you know if a car is automatic, 4x4 or has 7 seats?+

From the names of their versions in the official tax office tables («Aut.», «DSG», «CVT», «4x4», «quattro», «7 plazas»…); electric cars, plug-ins and full hybrids are always automatic. Some brands don't put it in the name, so a few may be missing: check with the dealer.

Do you take electric car grants into account?+

No: the price is the one in the tax office tables, without subtracting grants or discounts. If you qualify for one, the electric car will work out even better.

Can I share the result?+

Yes. Your answers go in the page address (mileage, budget, town…), so just copy it. We don't store anything and it contains no personal data.
