DGT eco sticker and low-emission zones

Which sticker does your car have and where can it go?

Type in your number plate and we'll give you the official DGT sticker, or tell us the fuel and when it was registered and we'll work it out. Then choose a city and see whether you can enter its low-emission zone, at what times and how big the fine is.

We give you the official sticker: we ask the DGT for it. We don't store your number plate.

City by city

Low-emission zones in Spain

Of the 66 cities we've checked, 50 already issue fines, 6 only warn and 10 don't restrict anything yet on a normal day. Crossed-out stickers can't enter if the car isn't registered locally; those with an orange border, only under conditions.

Rules change often and there are exceptions (reduced mobility, classic vehicles, services, residents…). Before you go, confirm on the council's website.

How it's decided

Which cars get each sticker

It's set by the Reglamento General de Vehículos (General Vehicle Regulations, annex II) based on the Euro emissions standard. The dates are the ones the DGT gives as a guide: what the technical data sheet says takes precedence.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which sticker my car has?+

With your number plate: type it in above and we'll ask the DGT for you, or check it for free on the DGT's online portal or in the miDGT app. That's the one that counts: low-emission zone cameras read the plate and check it against the DGT. The sticker costs €5 at Correos, authorised garages, gestorías and some tobacconists (estancos).

What if the DGT gives me a worse sticker than I should get?+

It happens with cars that were already Euro 4 (petrol) or Euro 6 (diesel) before the cut-off dates: the law goes by the Euro standard, not the date. If your technical data sheet says so, ask the DGT to correct the record and then buy the new sticker. Converting the car to LPG with an approved conversion can also change it.

What is a low-emission zone (ZBE)?+

An area of the city where the most polluting cars can't enter, or only under conditions. The Climate Change Law (Ley de Cambio Climático) requires municipalities of over 50,000 inhabitants to have one, but each council decides what it restricts and when.

What is the fine for entering a low-emission zone?+

Usually €200, reduced to €100 if you pay within 20 days. No points deducted. If you enter several times, each entry can be a separate fine.

Do I have to display the sticker?+

The DGT says displaying it is voluntary, but some councils require it in their bylaws to enter their zone or get perks. It goes in the bottom right corner of the windscreen.
