Anyone buying a 6-year-old 1.598 cm³ petrol car from a private seller for 10.000 € pays between 180 € in the Valencian Community and 600 € in Cantabria, in Castilla-La Mancha, and in Extremadura in ITP transfer tax in 2026, according to the rules of the 19 regions and autonomous cities reviewed by Cuánto Cuesta Mi Coche. It is collected by the region where the buyer lives, and the DGT fee of 55,70 € for the change of ownership comes on top.

The note
The general rate ranges from 3 % in Galicia to 6 % in 5 regions, and 13 of them also have special rules for some cars. A fixed amount for old cars: Valencian Community, Galicia, Aragon, Region of Murcia, and Canary Islands. Old cars pay nothing: Navarre and Catalonia. A higher rate for cars with many fiscal horsepower: Andalusia, Asturias, Balearic Islands, and Castilla y León. A higher rate for the most expensive or largest-engined cars: Valencian Community. Reduction for the DGT label: Galicia, Andalusia, Balearic Islands, and Catalonia. Half the tax if the buyer lives there: Ceuta and Melilla.
With a 13-year-old car bought for 2.500 €, the gap is bigger: nothing is paid in Navarre and in Catalonia and up to 150 € in Cantabria, in Castilla-La Mancha, and in Extremadura.
If the price is lower than the car's value in the tax office tables, tax is paid on that value: for a 2-year-old car that cost 30.000 € new and is bought for 19.000 €, the tax is calculated on 20.100 €.

How we calculate it
Methodology and sources
- Each region's rules for a used car bought from a private seller, read in its ceded taxes law (consolidated text from the BOE or its own gazette) with the article for each. The date in the table is that of the version consulted.
- The tax base is the higher of the price and the car's value in the tax office tables. The table's car (10.000 €, 6 years old) is calculated without knowing its tax office value, as in the website's table.
- Anything we couldn't confirm in the law isn't calculated: it stays at the general rate and each region's version says so.
- The ITP is collected by the region where the buyer lives, not where the car is or where the sale is signed.
- Full methodology →
Sources
- Law 22/2009, art. 33 (BOE) A car's ITP goes to the buyer's region
- Change of ownership (DGT) DGT fee of 55,70 €
