Change of ownership
How much does it cost to change a car's ownership?
If you buy a second-hand car from a private seller, you pay your region's ITP and the DGT fee. Choose the car, its year and your region, and we'll tell you how much it is and who pays what.

The purchase
The car, to work out its value to Hacienda
If you don't know, leave the make blank: we'll work it out on the purchase price.
Choose the make and type the model: we'll look it up in the official tax office (Hacienda) table.
Putting it in your name costs you
EstimateOn top of the car's price. The buyer pays it.
The buyer pays
- ITP transfer tax (4%)360 €On what you pay. If it's worth more to Hacienda (the tax office), you'll pay on that value: look up your car to find out.
- Change of ownership (DGT fee)55,70 €DGT fee 1.5, the same throughout Spain. You have 30 days from the contract to apply for the change.
The seller pays
- Notice of sale (DGT fee)8,67 €DGT fee 4.1.
- Road taxThis year's is already the seller's: whoever was the registered owner on 1 January pays it (you can split it in the contract). And the DGT won't make the change if last year's hasn't been paid.
Between the two of you 424 €
What it's worth to the tax office (Hacienda)
–Choose the car to look up its new price in Hacienda's tables. Over the years it drops to a percentage of that price: 84 % at 1 year, 39 % at 5 and 10 % at 12 or more.

Step by step
How the change of ownership works
- 1
You sign the contract
Buyer and seller, on every page. The DGT has a template on its website.
- 2
The buyer pays ITP
With form 620 (or their region's own), at the tax office of the region where they live. Each region sets its own deadline: one month, two months, or 30 working days from the purchase (you'll find it on its page).
- 3
The buyer applies to the DGT for the change
With fee 1.5 (55,70 €), the contract and proof of ITP, within 30 days at most. Online or by appointment.
- 4
The seller notifies the sale
If you don't do the change on the spot: with fee 4.1 (8,67 €), from that day on fines no longer go to them.
Before paying, check the car has a valid ITV (without it, the new registration certificate isn't valid) and last year's road tax paid: otherwise the DGT won't make the change.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to change a car's ownership?+
If you buy it from a private seller, your region's ITP plus the DGT fee of 55,70 €. ITP is usually 3 % to 6 % of the car's value, but several regions charge old cars a flat fee, powerful ones 8% or give electric cars a reduction. If a gestoría does it, add about 120 €.
Who pays for the change of ownership, the buyer or the seller?+
The buyer: ITP and the DGT fee, and they're the one who has to apply for the change within 30 days. The seller can notify the DGT of the sale (8,67 €) so fines stop being theirs, and this year's road tax is theirs, because it belongs to whoever was the registered owner on 1 January. Whatever you agree in the contract holds between you, but not before the authorities.
What value is ITP paid on?+
On the higher of two: what you pay or what it's worth to Hacienda. That value is your version's new price in its tables (Orden HAC/1501/2025) times a percentage depending on age: 84 % at 1 year, 56 % at 3, 39 % at 5 and 10 % at 12 or more.
What if we put a lower price in the contract?+
If it's less than its value to Hacienda, ITP is still paid on that value. If you declare less, Hacienda can check it and claim the difference from you.
How long do I have to do it?+
The DGT gives you 30 days from signing the contract to apply for the change of ownership, and before that you must have filed ITP (form 620 or your region's own). Each region sets its own deadline: one month, two months, or 30 working days from the purchase (you'll find it on its page).
Do I pay ITP if I buy from a dealer?+
No. If the seller is a business that sells cars, VAT applies and they give you an invoice: the DGT doesn't ask for ITP, just the invoice. The DGT fee (55,70 €) is still paid.
Do I need a gestoría?+
No. You can do it yourself on the DGT's online portal with a digital certificate, electronic ID or Cl@ve, or with an appointment at a traffic office. You need the contract signed by both of you on every page, proof of the ITP and the fee paid. A gestoría does it all for you for about 120 € more.
