Questions
Frequently asked questions
At what speed does it become a criminal offence?+
When you're going more than 60 km/h over the limit in town or more than 80 outside (article 379 of the Criminal Code): on a 50 street, over 110; on a 120 motorway, over 200. A judge decides and it always means losing your licence for 1 to 4 years.
How many points do you lose for speeding?+
None if you're only slightly over (€100 fine). Then 2, 4 or 6 points depending on the band (€300, €400 and €500), and 6 points for very serious cases (€600).
What margin do speed cameras have?+
The maximum permitted error under Order ICT/155/2020: 5 km/h (5% above 100) for fixed and tripod cameras, 3 km/h (3%) for average speed cameras and 7 km/h (7%) for cameras in a moving car. Whoever issues the fine deducts it; the limit is always the one on the sign.
What about city approaches limited to 80?+
On interurban motorways approaching cities with a limit below 100, the fine is the one for the posted limit, but points and criminal liability only count if you go over 100, using the 100 table.
Do average speed cameras fine the same way?+
Yes. They measure the average speed between two points and the same table applies, with a 3 km/h margin (3% above 100).
